Overview
U.S. Navy method is considered reliable and quick method to determine body fat percentage.
It uses few variables such as age, gender, height, body weight and circumferences of waist, hip and neck to perform calculation.
Body fat formula for males:
86.010 x log10(abdomen - neck) - 70.041 x log10(height) + 36.76
Body fat formula for females:
163.205 x log10(waist + hip - neck) - 97.684 x log10(height) - 78.387
* these formulas use Imperial units
How to measure?
Use a flexible measuring tape to take the measurements.
While using the tape, make sure it contacts but doesn't compress the skin.
Make sure you stand parallel to the floor while taking your circumferences measurements
Make all your measurements (including height and width) are taken with your shoes off and in thin clothes.
For men:
Neck - Look straight ahead and measure neck circumference at a point just below the larynx (Adam's apple).
Waist - Take Waist measurements at the belly button.
Formula does not require hip measurement.
For women:
Neck - Look straight ahead and measure neck circumference at a point just below the larynx (Adam's apple).
Waist - Take waist measurements above the belly button.
Hip - Place the tape around the widest part of the buttocks or hip.
